Where the numbers come from

  • Sale results are the Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton results loaded into the Hound House Data sales database, refreshed every ten minutes while a sale is running. Only yearlings are counted: a horse foaled the year before the sale.
  • Stud fees come from the stallion register. "Fee when conceived" is the fee two years before the sale, which is what the breeder actually paid; "most recent advertised fee" is the latest year on file for that horse.
  • Career stage is counted from the year he entered stud: first foals arrive the next year, so a sire who entered stud in 2024 has his first foals as yearlings in 2026.
  • Sires with no fee on file still appear in the list, but they have no fee line, no net figure, and they sit out of fee-based peer groups and the overview map.

Reading the four views

  • Sale price distribution. One ridge per sire on a shared log price axis, each scaled to its own peak so shapes compare, not crop sizes. Ticks along the baseline are individual horses; the dark line is the stud fee; the dot is the median. RNAs are not sale prices and are left out.
  • RNA rate. Horses bought back ÷ horses that went through the ring. Withdrawn horses are excluded. Hips still to sell in a live sale are not in either number.
  • Avg price − stud fee. The bar runs from the fee (tick) to the average price (dot). Mean is the accounting answer; median is what a typical horse did. "Count RNAs as $0" is the stricter version, since the breeder paid the fee on those too.
  • Overview map. Every sire in the selection: fee across, median price ÷ fee up, bubble area is horses offered, color is career stage. Outlined bubbles are your picks. Hover for the sire.

Colors, on purpose

  • Career stage is an ordered scale, so it is drawn as one hue stepping from light to dark. Lightness survives every kind of color-vision deficiency, which a five-hue rainbow does not, and the light-to-dark order reads as "younger to older" without a key.
  • Up to five sires in compare mode get distinct colors that were checked with a color-vision simulator so each pair stays distinguishable under deutan, protan and tritan vision. Past five there is no honest way to keep hues apart, so every sire switches to one color and the name on each row does the identifying. Hover always names the sire.
  • Orange is reserved for the focal sire in peer mode, gray for his peers. One highlight, everything else quiet.

Not yet

  • Late withdrawals. The results feed records that a horse was withdrawn, not when. Counting horses scratched within 24 hours of their session as RNAs needs a timestamp on the out, which the feed can start keeping from the next refresh onward.
  • Post-sale private sales. Many RNAs sell within the week and never show as sold here.
  • Two-year-old sales. OBS March and April are loaded but this page is yearlings only; a 2-year-old version needs a different fee lag and breeze data.
